When people think of Shibazuke, I think they usually imagine Shibazuke cucumbers.
Kurama Tengu, by the way, also likes cucumber Shibazuke.

But Shibazuke in Ohara, Kyoto is eggplant.
As featured on TV’s Bratamori the other day, the ingredients for Ohara’s eggplant shibazuke are as simple as eggplant, red shiso, and salt! In fact, when you eat it, this is sour. If you are not used to eating it, it just seems sour.
I sometimes go touring by motorcycle in the Ohara area, so I stop by a direct sale place called “Sato-no-Eki Ohara” on the way to buy some pickled eggplant in shibazuke.

I’m not a fan of sour pickles, but these were well received by the elderly ladies.
My mother sometimes asks me to buy this sour eggplant pickles. They are also well received by the female managers where I work.
But when I sent this Ohara pickled eggplant to my uncle who had moved to Aomori Prefecture, he said, “I don’t need pickles.”
Ohara’s pickled eggplant, perhaps, it is a taste that only Kyoto people can enjoy.
