Iyo ~! Pom-pom-pom-pom♪♪

Hello, everyone. I am Mr. President Hajime, a man who is very close to Kyoto but has managed to love it so far. Today, I’d like to guide you to the world of “the very peculiar bridge story.” Please be careful not to be scared not to wet your pants.

Well, the other world! Kai kai ~~♪♪

It is there today as well. The dead comes back to the living world. The bridge with such folklore is Ichijo bridge. Yes, the return bridge. The length 6.2 m bridge spanning the Horikawa River on Ichijo Street. Such a small bridge!

Ichijomodori Bridge

Located on the outskirt of the city, it is a bridge leading to the place of burial. Known as the “bridge of the other world” between this world and the next, it is one of the most magical places in Kyoto.

What is the origin of the name? Why is it called “Ichijo return bridge”??

I’m glad you asked. And, you know, there’s this anecdote.

It was the 18th year of Engi (918). The funeral procession of Kiyoyuki Miyoshi, a doctor of literature, passed this bridge. His son, Jozo, who rushed to the scene, hung over the coffin and mourned, probably like this, hi♪

Father~~! Why did you die?
You, stupid bastard ~!

Monk crying

His son, Jozo prayed to the God and Buddha. Then, with a sudden clap of thunder, Mr. Kiyoyuki made a spectacular comeback to this world for a brief period of time! He came back to life, hugged Jozo, and rejoiced at their reunion.

After this incident, the name of the bridge, which had been called “Tuchimikado-bridge” until then, was changed to “Return bridge”. The bridge had the name which means “the bridge that the dead come back to this world.”

Back to this world!! Hooray!

Rejoicing priests

Yeah!!

There is a story like this about the return bridge.

It is customary to keep women who are about to get married, people involved in marriage negotiations, and wedding processions away from the bridge. Why? “Not to go back to their parents’ house.” On the contrary to this, it is said that during the Pacific War, soldiers going to war and their families secretly wished for their return.

That is all about “Ichijo return bridge.” I’ll wrap up the introduction.

Adios amigo god flamingo~~♪
