About Remains of Shoren-in gate

Remains of Shoren-in gate

Remains of Shoren-in gate is a temple of Tendai sect located in Kyoto City Higashiyama Ward Awataguchi. Shoren-in, along with Kajii (Sanzen-in) and Komyo-in, is one of the three remains of gate of Tendai sect temples and is one of the temples which represents Tendai sect. (Remains of Tendai three gates). This temple is a remains of gate temple which children of the Imperial family and regents entered, and many members of the imperial family have served as chief priests. As it was once the temporary Gosho in Edo era, it has been called “Awata Gosho.”

The principal deity is Jikko Nyorai. Shoren-in was named after Seiren-bo Saicho built and was located in Minami-tani in Mt. Hiei East Pagoda. It was the residence of prominent monks such as Jikaku Daishi Ennin, Anhui, and Suzei, and was a mainstay of the East Pagoda.

Night-time viewings take place in limited time every spring and fall and illumination in the garden takes place.

By the way, the Shogun’s Mound Seiryuden at the top of Mt. Higashiyama is the enclaved precincts of Shoren-in Temple.

The photo was taken during the season of autumn leaves, when the magnificent Japanese garden in the precincts of the temple was tinted moderately red. There were not too many worshippers, so I was able to relax and enjoy my visit. One thing that I bothered me was the sign on the bell in the precincts that said, “Please feel free to toll the bell,” but I wondered, “Won’t this sound disturb the neighbors?”
