I once learned this from a teacher at school.
However, is it truly so? I absolutely think the history is not the mere past. It is because I think the history is after all, the trajectories of people who have lived in the present of “that era”.
There is a lot of wisdom scattered in it from people who lived in that era.
I believe that the greatest significance of studying history is to learn about the wisdom of people who have lived in the present, and their way of living and thinking.

And to practice the wisdom we learned in our daily life, and absorb it as ours. I think the wisdom we got in such a way will certainly or definitely be supports to live from now for that person and also the guidelines. It is highly possible that new future or new cultures will be created from there.
The history is not memorization at all. I think it makes no sense to do such a thing. It is only that we got technique to get good scores in tests at best. And of course, the fact that is said “it’s after all the past thing” is not necessarily useless.
Creating the future at the same time telling the past. I always spend every day, thinking at the historic city Kyoto that that is the true meanings and values to learn history.
