Part 1: The Amida Well of Bakku Yoraku

“Namu Amida Butu, Amida Butu! Namu Amida Butu, Amida Butu!”

I, Tatumi, and my good friends were walking around the capital of Kyoto that day, chanting Buddhist prayers. With Kuya-sama in the lead, Oyu, Ren, Rensei-sama and even Kotaro, the giant white dog, are with me. Many other compatriots who had spent time together in Kouro-kan also share in the action. They have all been healed of their illnesses, escaped extreme poverty and rediscovered the meaning and value of life through the bond of Buddhist prayers. Perhaps that’s why they all look so good. Now, why are we walking around the capital chanting Buddhist prayers? That is, to dig wells in the east and west of the capital of Kyoto.

The capital of Kyoto was frequently flooded by the Kamo River when heavy rains fell. But on the other hand, if the sun continued to shine, it has serious water shortage problems.

It is Kuya-sama who stood up to address such people’s concerns.

“Can you all please lend me a helping hand?”
One day, in front of all of us gathered at the Nishi Koro-kan, Kuya-sama bowed his head and asked.
There are few wells in the capital of Kyoto. But if the sunshine continues, many people suffer from water shortages. I want to do something about that.”
We were silently waiting for Kuya-sama’s next words.
“The art of well-digging lies in this arm. But when it comes to dig wells in the capital of Kyoto, many people’s helps will be needed. So, I want to lend everyone’ hands.”
I looked over at the person sitting next to me. Then I saw them all smiling calmly and looking at each other in the same way.
“And above all.”

Kuya-sama took a deep breath, and after taking a deep breath, he said.

“To do this good deed is also to believe in and act upon the teachings of Amitabha Buddha. Leaving behind all distinctions and discrimination and simply act for the sake of someone else who is living the suffering. Now that concrete means is also what we are doing: digging wells for all those suffering from water shortages.

The normally calm Kuya-sama’s words and actions gradually begin to heat up.

“Amitabha Buddhas are invisible. Though invisible, they are certainly be there. Certainly being there, they are watching over all of us. Therefore, if we strive to do good deeds, Amitabha Buddhas will surely respond to our good deeds. And they will surely give us all great benefits.”

The greatest benefit of their giving us the ‘water of life’ without fail.

I believe in it. And I’ll keep believing in it. From the bottom of my heart.

“To be continued to the latter part”
