Hello. This is Defeated Warrior. It is getting cold finally. I would like to talk about Gion Festival although it is the story of summer which is not this season.

When I was still young, my uncle took me once to participate in a mikoshi washing at Yasaka Shrine. We walked with festival goers carrying flaming torches and carried a mikoshi at Yasaka Shrine! As we all carried the mikoshi, I felt as if I had empowered by the water from the priest’s washing of the mikoshi.

When I was a student, I walked around Shijo in Gion during Yoiyama and Yoiyama.

Gion Festival Yoiyama

At the beginning of the Gion Festival, there were 66 countries in Japan, and 66 floats were erected to pray for the happiness of the countries and celebrate the Gion Festival.

It is said to be held in the middle of summer, not only to pray for happiness, but also to drive away troubles, illnesses, and evil in the city.

Kyoto is for generations, along with Nara, and has suffered little damage from war or earthquakes, which may be a reflection of the residents’ faith in shrines and Buddhism.

I think that actor Kazuhiko Nishimura said on TV sometime ago that it is correct to pray at Yasaka Shrine from the south gate and exit at the west gate, not from the west gate. He said that it is respectful to pray to the deity of Yasaka Shrine, Susanoo-sama, from the south.
