The foods Kyoto people eat in new year holiday season, of course these include new year dishes. But I would like to introduce the Toshikoshi soba we eat the last day of the year as ours won’t become reference because it is ready-made items recently.
I think many Kyoto people eat herring soba as Toshikoshi soba. (At least it is true in my family.) Well herrings are being sold by three slices when I go to supermarket nearby as “Kanro-ni of migaki nishin”. Just putting on this on Kake soba, though… I liked this especially in my childhood and perhaps because I like this herring soba, I, Kurama Tengu might still prefer soba to udon.
As I describe lightly the origin of this herring soba, in 1882 (Meiji era 15), Yosakichi Matsuno, who was the second generation of “Matsuba” soba shop in Gion, invented it and sold to the public. Meiji era 15 is when far before my grandfather was born.
Also, when the grandfather was healthy my family members were eating herring soba, so I think that herring soba was a popular being in general households in Kyoto from my grandfather’s generation.
Question of children in Kyoto.
・Why isn’t there any herring in soba of Donbei?
