Yasaka Shrine’s deities Part 22

How are you everyone? This is the defeated soldier. I wonder if Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who is enshrined at Yasaka Shrine, will be able to save Kushi-inada-hime, who is also enshrined at the shrine. Well, let me continue my story.

Then, Hayasusanowo-no-Mikoto replied, “I am the younger brother of Amaterasu Omikami, with whom I share a mother. I have now descended from the heavens, Takamagahara, and have appeared, he said.

Hearing this, the Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi deities said, “I did not know that, and I am truly in awe of this. If so, I will gladly give you my daughter, as you have requested.”

Then, the Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi responded to Susanoo-sama. “Firstly I would like you to exterminate that Yamata-no-orochi, and then, if it is all right with you, we will let our daughter to marry you.”

Ashinazuchi-sama and Tenazuchi-sama continued, “The Yamata-no-orochi has a rock or pine tree for each head, and mountains on both sides. It is very smart. How on earth, will you exterminate that?”

Then, Hayasusanowo-sama immediately transformed the maiden, Kushi-inda-hime, into the form of a yuzume comb (*a beautiful and sacred hair comb) and placed it in his hair, which was bound near his ear, hiding it, and then addressed the gods Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi.

“You shall make sake that has been brewed many times (eight times) with great care (yashioori). And you should enclose it with a hedge, and make eight gates (*that Orochi’s head might enter), and at each gate make eight planks (*that Orochi might take its seat), and lay them out, and for each of the planks, place a sake boat. And in each of the sake boats, fill up as much of that eight-Yanuri sake as you can, and wait for it.”

(The sake Orochi was given to drink was very thick and strong, but one theory is that it was a poisoned drink that Susanoo-sama had conspired to make it ill-tempered.)
