A symbol representing Saga Arashiyama, which Emperor Kameyama wrote a poem about.

Togetsu Bridge with a rainbow on it

Wonderful, don’t you think it is the superb landscape? Oh!?
Hah hah. Look, the rainbow looks a bridge!

I was very moved at the time. I have never seen such a beautiful landscape before. Above Togetu bridge after rain, the beautiful rainbow road in the pre-dawn sky. All of this move my heart greatly.

Togetu bridge, that spans the Katura River, which flows between Sagano and Arashiyama. It is said that the bridge was first built by the monk Dosho during the Showa period (834 – 848), and that the present location was built later by the wealthy Kyoto merchant Ryoi Kadokura (Tenmon 23 (1554) to Keicho 19 (1614)). The bridge in use today was completed in June 1934.

The origin of its name…

The bridge was named Togetu bridge (Bridge of the Moon) after Emperor Kameyama (May 27, 1249 – 1305, Kagen 3) in the Kamakura period (1185 -1333), who saw the moon moving across the bridge and commented, “It looks like a full moon crossing over a bridge.”

Emperor Kameyama not only ordered Fujiwara no Tameji to compile a collection of waka poems, but he was also a literary scholar who left behind many excellent poems and Chinese poetry.

The combination of the Togetu Bridge over the gently flowing Katura River and Arashiyama in the background is truly spectacular, and the beauty of the four seasons, not to mention cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, can be experienced throughout the year.
Arashiyama and Sagano have many attractions, including Tenryuji Temple, Nomiya Shrine, and Okochi Villa, which are all located in the immediate vicinity. There are also many recommended gourmet spots.
