Subway Karasuma Line Shijo Station. Going to Takatuji Street from the exit no.5 of that station, turning right, and going forward for some time, you can see the shop.

Takagi Coffee Shop (Takatuji main shop)

This is a traditional coffee shop founded in 1976 (Showa 51). Apparently. It was established through a joint venture by three former employees of “Inoda Coffee.” It’s a retro coffee shop in Kyoto with the charm of a long-established establishment.

Takagi Coffee Shop’s Takatuji Main Store is a long-established café where you can enjoy an extensive menu in a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. The variety and generous portions of the menu are truly impressive. For example…

There are many other items on the menu as well. It’s really hard to decide what to order. In the end, I decided to try this one.

Fish and croquette set (1,300 yen)

This is a truly indulgent dish that comes as a set with fish and chips and croquettes. You can choose between bread or rice. I was in the mood for bread today, so I ordered that. And it turned out to be pretty amazing.

I was a little surprised by how big the loaf of bread was. It’s quite thick, too. In my mind, white bread is usually narrow and not very large, but this loaf was different. When I took a bite, I could taste the butter that had soaked right into the dough, creating a wonderful flavor that complemented the bread’s toasty aroma.

The fish fry and croquettes are great, too. They’re crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside – absolutely satisfying. It’s not something I get to eat very often, after all. These are definitely dishes you can only find here.

Well, I’m done with the meal. Now, it’s time for dessert. Here’s what I ordered this time.

Homemade Rum Pudding (550 yen)

Just look at that rich, glossy sheen. Isn’t it wonderful? Take a bite, and you’ll be greeted by the aroma of rum and the rich, creamy flavor of the pudding. These flavors spread across your palate alongside the sweetness of the caramel, filling your mouth with deliciousness and pure joy. The moist, soft texture is just perfect, too.

Ah, what a blissful pudding moment this is.

The luxurious dessert break, enjoyed alongside the coffee I ordered as part of a set. I truly had a wonderful time.
Come to think of it, the area around Takagi Coffee is home to Kyoto Cinema and Bukkoji Temple, as well as the Takatuji Main Store of Saryo Suisensui and Machiya Café Marble. It’s such a great neighborhood. I found myself getting really excited just thinking about it. Combining a visit here with these other spots is sure to make your Kyoto holiday even more interesting. Just imagining it makes me happy.
