It’s a season that feels half like winter and half like spring, with warm, sunny rays enveloping my entire body. It happened one day. When I got off the bus at the Shijo-Omiya stop – the one along Omiya-dori – I saw what looked like a café right in front of me.

Café and Light Meals Hattori. It’s just about lunchtime, so maybe I should grab lunch here today. There’s a menu board outside the shop. Let’s see what’s on it.

Daily Lunch Special (Bite-sized chicken cutlet with curry sauce) 880 yen. Lunch Set A (Bite-sized pork cutlet, Western-style omelet, salad and rice, pickles and soup) 990 yen, etc.
I see. In these times of rising prices, this is a very affordable and reasonable price. It made me want to eat here even more. And so, I stepped lightly into Hattori Café.
The interior is nice, too. It really has that Showa-era vibe – it feels like a classic, old-fashioned café. Golden light illuminating the red-tiled wall. A black sofa reminiscent of the Showa era glows in that light. As you sit there comfortably, enveloped in the warm atmosphere of the shop, you can’t help but get lost in thought.

Having lived through the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras alongside the people, it possesses a unique Showa-era atmosphere distinct from that of the Reiwa and Heisei eras. It’s still here. Waiting for people here. Everyone has someone they want to see. There are days spent waiting for that. If there’s someone you want to see, there’s someone waiting for you. That’s nice.
According to what I’ve heard, Hattori opened its doors in 1947, right after the war, and has been run by three generations of the family. The current owner is Hisako Hattori, the third-generation proprietor. Her grandfather’s younger brother – her great-uncle – was the founder, and it seems he was so struck by the taste of coffee after drinking it on the battlefield. “Everyone’s drinking this delicious stuff!” he said.
So, when he returned home after the war, he decided to open a café in Shijo Omiya, where he had originally lived.
At such a historic café, I decided to try this dish today.

Lunch Set A (Mini pork cutlet, Western-style omelet, salad and rice, pickles and soup) 990 yen. Four bite-sized pieces of pork cutlet. A western-style omelet featuring a striking contrast between the soft, appetizing yellow egg and the vibrant red ketchup. And the salad served alongside it. Sounds great, doesn’t it? It looks absolutely delicious. The fluffy delicious omelet melts in your mouth, while the bite-sized pork cutlet gently yet firmly spreads its rich flavor throughout your mouth. When a refreshing salad was served, it left my mouth feeling pleasantly refreshed. I really enjoyed the meal.

It’s nice to have rice, pickles, and miso soup. The portions are just right.
By the way, Hattori has plenty of their items on the menu as well.
・Set meal options such as the Pork Cutlet Set (1,230 yen) and Ginge-Fried Pork (1,180 yen) (served with rice, pickles, and soup).
・Sandwiches such as the Egg Sandwich (830 yen) and Fruit Sandwich (830 yen).
・Various beverages such as coffee (460 yen) and cream soda (600 yen). And more.
As you can see, they have a wide variety of menu items waiting for all of you.
A café that stood the test of time and remains here to this day. Hattori – a café steeped in the atmosphere of the Showa era, embodying the best of the old days. Hattori – a cozy little spot where you can relax and take a breather. We had a wonderful time. Thanks you very much.
