What makes tourists from other prefectures feel difference is so called “Kyoto style businesses”. Merchants in Kyoto rarely are obsequious, if anything, it is right that we think that they have the stance that they sell their products for us. Even if the products are not sold, Kyoto people don’t change their attitude, so Kyoto people are not good at business.

Of course, there are many shops which are trying to sell their products, and Kyoto merchants sell high quality products more than anything than other places, so they accompany the Kyoto brand. On the contrary, when I live in Kyoto, I am sometimes surprised to notice that the pastries we receive and eat naturally are famous pastries nationally. It sometimes happens in Kyoto that dried sweets and Konpeito that I disliked in my childhood are such famous products.

The story goes back but when we go shopping in the stores in Kyoto, when the buyers behave modestly, they go well. It might make you feel a little different, but as for sense of us born in Kyoto and grew in there it seems to be just right that buyers are obsequious.
However, clerks in supermarkets and convenience stores serve normally. I feel strong trend of Kyoto style business mainly in individual shops.
