“La Madrague” is the old name for the port town of Saint-Tropez. It’s said that whenever she (French actress Brigitte Bardot) grew tired of city life, she would often say, “I want to go back to La Madrague” (the villa in the South of France that Brigitte owned). He named this restaurant with the hope that it would evoke that same feeling for our guests.
The origin of name for café Madrague that the shop owner there, Sanshiro Hirotaka Yamazaki told. As I was recalling that, I was standing in front of the shop.

Café Madrague. This café opened in 2011 as the successor to “Café Seven”, a beloved local institution that had been in business for nearly 50 years since its founding in 1963.
Take the exit from Karasuma-Oike Subway Station and head toward Oshikoji Street, which is located just past the Manga Museum. Madrague is located a short walk down the street.
A quiet, secluded spot away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In a place like that, I can relax and spend my time peacefully watching the street go by.

That sounds great – it’s the best, isn’t it? At Madrague, you can enjoy a wide variety of delicious dishes, including spaghetti, toast, curry rice, and their special salad. Plus, the portions are quite generous. Just one dish is enough to fill you up and leave you completely satisfied. For example, take a look at this menu.

Spaghetti with Soft-Boiled Eggs, Cheese, and Tomatoes (1,100 yen)
How about a hearty serving of spaghetti where soft-boiled eggs, cheese, and tomatoes come together in a vibrant blend? The tomato sauce is piled high with cheese, and the soft-boiled egg perfectly complement the flavor. The portion of spaghetti is pretty substantial, too. It’s like the earth itself, full of vitality. This is amazing.
And while you’re at it, why not try Madrague’s famous Corona egg sandwich?

Corona Egg Sandwich (1,180 yen)
Just look at this sandwich. It’s huge. The egg is just massive. I’ve never seen an egg this big in my life. Oh, what a wonderful display of individuality! Since this is the kind of sandwich it is, there is a knack to eating it. Hold it with your hand supporting the bottom, and eat it little by little, starting from the corner. Alternatively, you can cut it in half with a fork starting from the center.
This dish alone is enough to leave you completely full and satisfied. The power of egg is just amazing.
By the way, the dessert menu includes special pancakes (650 yen), a classic chocolate banana parfait (890 yen), cream cheese cake (550 yen), and apple pie (550 yen).
The portions on the food menu were so huge that I couldn’t eat them this time. But next time, I’ll definitely try it.
If you’re ever in Karasuma Oike area, be sure to stop by. A café experience unique to Kyoto is waiting for you.
